See, the Obama + Lincoln Cupcake Portrait come to life.

Hear the NPR broadcast

Zilly Rosen, an artist from Buffalo, N.Y., created a portrait of Barack Obama and Abraham Lincoln out of 5,900 cupcakes. The cupcakes contain a cream filling and are topped with a colored disc made of fondant, which is a more pliable kind of icing made with powdered sugar.

The portrait was part of Lincoln's birthday bicentennial. The 9 foot by 14 foot portrait was created in the Smithsonian, on a platform on the first floor of the Luce Foundation Gallery and took over four (4) hours to complete. Over 10, 000 people attended the event with almost 25,000 viewing via live cam. What an event. After the portrait was finished, the audience was invited to enjoy the cupcakes, up close and personal. Living art. What a concept.

Zilly garnered attention late last year when she created her first homage to President Obama, which was part of Time Magazine' and Flickr's Obama Project.

I love these black and white cupcakes with a touch of pink. They were made for Valentine's Day by Lots of Sprinkles aka Sharon from Sydney, Australia.

They certainly do inspire memories of Paris: Love, The Eiffel Tower, the Opera, Haute Couture, Pink Ribbons (Think Gigi), the Rooster (coq au vin), etc.

Sharon is from Down Under and is the creator of some of my favorite cupcakes, notably her fondant cupcake transformations of the Sex and the City women in celebration of the movie release in May 2008.

You can see more of Sharon's cupcakery in her blog and website.

These cupcakes are adorable. They were made by BreLeeD when she went to visit her Grammy.

She also decorated her very special cupcakes with cute cupcake liners decorated with conversational hearts.

Love is in the details.
