Winners of the Toronto Birthday Cupcake Bake-Off Contest

Cupcakes by Juanita Koo
Winner of the Grand Prize

The Torontoist held a birthday cupcake bake-off to find the winner of the best cupcakes that best described the Canadian city of Toronto. The winning entry belonged to Juanita Koo.
"Toronto cannot be expressed in just one cupcake; it is such a colorful multi-cultural city, lots to see, do and eat, accessible, fun and interesting. Here is a counter clockwise tour of my rainbow cupcakes starting from the top left: The Airport: an international airport where everyplace is accessible; High Park: a huge park right in the middle of the city; Music and drinks all across town; Rogers Centre and the CN Tower; Cabs everywhere: you never have to call them!; The TTC streetcar: easy to get around; The Beaches in the east end: volleyball and blue flag beaches; The 401 highway takes you to Kingston, Ottawa, Montreal, and many more!; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle; City Hall; Chinatown: always good dim sum!; and bicycles everywhere in the city."
The other cupcake entries were equally original, elaborate and included the Toronto night sky, the transit system and it's multiculturalism. One entrant went on to describe what she INTENDED to bake since she had no baking experience whatsoever but had spent two (2) hours trying to create something she was ill-equipped to bake. Her entry was designed to serve as a "warning" to those with the delusions who dare enter a cupcake contest without baking skills or experience.

You can see the rest of the Toronto cupcake entries here.

UPDATE: What a small world! I just ran into the contest winner Juanita Koo on Twitter! Here's a link to her "Sweet Things" blog + website.

Natalie, the owner of the Tickled Pink Cupcakery created the recipe for her Shamrock Shake Cupcake. Her goal was to create a "a green mint cake with green mint icing, super minty, just like a Shamrock Shake"

We have the good fortune of Natalie's recipe in the hopes or re-creating the same taste sensation at home in time for St. Patty's Day.

You can find Tickled Pink's Shamrock Shake Cupcake recipe here in her blog. The instructions for the cupcake, frosting and fondant shamrock are also included.

The Tickled Pink Cupcakery is a new business and Dayton, Ohio's first gourmet cupcakery. check out her blog for more background on Tickled Pink. We wish Natalie the best of luck!

The Lucky,
originally uploaded by Flour & Sun

The Lucky is described as a "chocolate or vanilla with marshmallow frosting rolled in Lucky Charms." What a unique cupcake idea!

Flour & Sun Bakery is billed as Westchester County, New York's first and only cupcake bakery. According to their website, they are a new bakery with a scheduled Grand Opening set for March 21st. You can learn more about them on their website.

What a perfect cupcake for St. Patty's Day. I can almost hear the Irish brogue of the trademark Lucky Charms leprechaun singing, "It's magically delicious!"

Melody Brandon is the Owner and Pastry Chef of Sweet & Saucy, a premier southern California catering business specializing in custom desserts. I read Melody's recent blog post in total awe of the incomparable Barbie 50th Anniversary cookies and cupcakes she prepared for Mattel in honor of their best selling doll's milestone.

You can view more photos and learn more about Melody's treats in her blog. The cupcakes are very stylish, yummy looking and, of course, pink! These are definitely the kind of cupcakes Barbie would serve at her own birthday party! The cookies bear the likeness of Barbie's modern day image, her iconic signature, ponytailed silhouette and even a pink poodle!
